Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum) is known as the “Pharmacy of the Forest”. The small bush, with distinctive heart shaped leaves, is a significant and sacred plant to Maori. It has been used traditionally to treat cuts, wounds, stomach and rheumatic pain, skin disorders, toothache, bruises & abrasions.
Among its many healing properties, it is reputed to soothe:
- insect bites and stings
- skin rashes
- poor circulation
- wounds & cuts
- aches and pains
Kawakawa's antimicrobial and analgesic properties make it useful for treating infections, and it is helpful in reducing inflammation of various skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and rashes. It is also antidyspectic (counters dyspepsia or indigestion) and antispasmotic (eases muscle spasms or cramps), so it makes an excellent digestion aid.
It is diaphoretic too (it promotes sweating) which some believe is useful for expelling toxins and pathogens via the skin and can help with recovery from colds and flu.
It's non-sting, so perfect for kids and any skin scrapes.
We recommend using kawakawa balm alongside our healing eczema balm as a soothing cream during the day to keep the skin from drying out and itching too much.
If you need some more power-packed healing, we recommend this Healing Balm.

"Best purchase I've ever made, it's my 'go to' first aid balm. Especially great when I burnt my leg on my partners motorbike exhaust pipe... I was very lucky it kept the blistering at bay, took the heat and sting of it out too. This is it almost completely healed now. Burnt 12th of January. Also takes the itch & pain out of cat scratches and insect bites too." Alyze Lindsay
"I have used your Kawakawa balm through a friend. It’s amazing on healing tattoos. I absolutely loved it." - Janice Nelmes
